Nearly there..

Throughout installation, the House Collective have experienced many ups and downs, however, we are pleased to announce that we are nearly set up for assessment. Assessment of our work will take place 20th May, the exhibition "Three Times Around the Sun" will then be open to the public, starting with the private view on 29th May at 6.30pm.

Recreating the past

Since the mini exhibition, I picked up on the comments that people made about the smells and warmth of the space. I have taken this a step further and tried to recreate a smell that people instantly relate to babies/small children. I have used various products such as Johnson's talcum powder and various non-bio, pure detergents/softeners and rubbed/washed them into a piece of translucent fabric. It has taken on the scents very well, and left a residue on the fabric.

Next I plan to work on the warmth of the space, creating a comforting womb-like experience.

The past

From looking at memories and occurrences from when my child was born, and basing my work upon remembrance, the artist Chiharu Shiota was suggested to me. Shiota creates large scale installations, often with black thread, and weaves household, everyday and personal objects within these structures. Traces of the past, dealing with anxieties and remembrances often appear within Shiota's work.

I have began to develop my work in combining the fold/drape work with personal objects from the past. I have experimented by encapsulating these objects within a shear draped fabric. The fabric acts as a protection for these personal, precious objects.

I aim to develop this work, along with the concept of the forgotten space under the bed, and the uncanny for my degree show work.

Fold, drape, twist.

After looking at the concept of the fold by Deleuze, and Alison Watt's 'Phantom' works at the National Gallery, I was motivated to present a response to what I had found. To view more images, please visit my Facebook page, where you can see the full album.

3. Drawers, Chests and Wardrobes

"Wardrobes with their shelves, desks with their drawers, and chests with their false bottoms are veritable organs of the secret psychological life. Indeed, without these 'objects' and a few others in equally high favor, our intimate life would lack a model of intimacy. They are hybrid objects, subject objects. Like us, through us and for us, they have a quality of intimacy." - Gaston Bachelard

The following images were influenced by the above quote, however, taking it one step further and placing a forgotten space into an intimate space. I set up video cameras under 2 beds and my sons cot in my house, recording the forgotten spaces, illustrating lost objects, forgotten rubbish and storage space. The 20 minute videos are very subtle, as it is only the lighting within the frame that changes throughout the recording.

I plan to use the idea of these spaces as representing the psychological life within my degree show work.
