Projection, on projection - an experiment.

This experimentation method produced many dark, somewhat negative photos. The expression on my face reflects this too. I projected an image on myself, took a photo, then projected that image back onto myself etc. The projections against the body distorted them, therefore being unable to see the original projection. If I was to take this idea further, I could include messages or photos that I do not want to necessarily  be seen. This has been influenced by my elective on the art of thereness.

Experimentation with mirror and shutter remote.

Throughout these images I experimented by using a shutter remote. This allowed me to position myself in a desired position and have more control on how the image turned out. This, I feel, was very successful. The images are very intimate and somewhat oblique, showing my naked body and its reflection in a mirror. Details are able to be seen as a result of the natural light, for example stretch marks and imperfections in my skin. I feel that the images without a full face, or at least my eyes, work better, they give a sense of mystery, and they do not focus on a tight narrative, myself. the images are relatable to the viewer. If I was to develop these images, I would focus on how they would be displayed, possibly looking at creating a small space for intimate viewing.

This series of images shows the importance of several objects. This is illustrated by how they are presented, isolated on a mundane chair, with a very plain background. items within the images include my tshirt that I wore when I was in labour and gave birth to my little boy, one of his vests, a box including his hospital tags, umbilical cord clip, article from the newspaper and first outfit. They appear to be quit negative images, this reflects my post natal depression, and how having a baby has caused it.

If I was to take this work into development, I would possibly create an installation. This would give a very different outlook on the objects. However, there is a risk of items going missing or being damaged, this I want to avoid at all costs. I plan to print some of these images on a translucent fabric, in order to enhance the ghost like figures in the images.

WORK UP TO DATE

My initial research began by looking at my own body and the aspects I do not like, manipulating them in a negative way to show my feelings towards them.

I moved on to projecting words onto my body, beginning with the word "Excess", a word that stood out for me in Marsha Meskimmon's article "The Monstrous and the Grotesque."

My work developed into projecting words relating to the post pregnancy body, however, I felt these were too obvious and didn't keep the viewers attention by stating what the image was about.

I experimented with light and projecting a different material on my body. This wrapping paper gives the image a subtle beauty. Personally, I like these images, which is progress in the acceptance of my post pregnancy body.

I also used mirrors to cover my nude body. When I received feedback from other students, this image was very popular. The mirrors represent an empty vessel, something that was there that isn't anymore. They don't focus on anything n particular. The pose and black and white nature of the photo give the impression of negativity, an aspect which I am trying to portray, as I am a sufferer of post natal depression.
I took an opposite turn in experimentation with covering my whole body, rather than parts of it. This was to allow the viewer to attempt to depict a human figure.

I cropped some of my previous images and used photoshop to create abstract and oblique images. These images contain parts of my 12 week and 20 week scans. I like these images alot, however, I feel they could be taken further.

Overview of The Art of 'Thereness'

Digital wall for this elective: http://padlet.com/LincolnElective/Thereness14

Within this theory based elective, we questioned what ‘thereness’ is. Through the sessions, we have explored the use of illusion, trickery, distortion, intentional confusion, slight of hand, slight of eye – the act of pulling the wool over our eyes and how that is manifested in the contemporary visual arts. Any research and work generated through this elective was uploaded to our digital wall. A vast variety of artists were presented to us through these sessions, broadening my knowledge of work within this context. We also focused on the way we gather research and where we find it. The concept of ‘thereness’ I found quite confusing, as it can literally be anything, therefore, I cannot point out a specific piece of work that I have produced that relates to the elective, as I believe, ‘thereness’ is all around.
At the beginning of the elective, we were asked to create an image of 'thereness' and then again at the end of the sessions, here are my drawings:

They are very different. The first drawing illustrates something that is there in front of you, however, my views changed over the course of the 4 weeks, and I came to the conclusion that thereness can bbe anything, its just how you perceive it. I, therefore, created marks on my page using the end of my pen, so they could only be seen in the light, and gently traced my pen across the paper to create some sort of mark.

We were asked to give 10 words that define 'thereness' in our opinion, mine were:
Unknown, illusion, experience, imaginative, presence, existence, momentary, deception, object, available.

I also generated a statement at the end of this elective, giving my view of what thereness is.
Thereness is a variety of things to me. Nothing
has to be right in front of you to be there. Artists
and scientists have brought several aspects to
our attention, that we may not have seen before.
Thereness is all around us, its just how you
perceive it which makes you understand it and
notice it.

Overview of Projecting Light - Spatial Mark-Making Elective

Within this elective, I gained new skills involving the manipulation of light, and creating marks. The sessions involved casting shadows from various transparent, translucent and opaque objects, using our bodies to created distorted images through shadow, and projecting and moving light in space. Research and experiments generated through this elective were uploaded by all students to our digital wall, a resource for us all to refer back to. The sessions have influenced my studio work, in that I have used light and projection in my images to change the appearance of the subject.
